For this worship set I want to focus on the cross of Jesus. So we are going to sing songs that come at this theme from various perspectives all climaxing in the recitation of the Heidelberg Catechism question #1.
The Greatness of God — Psalm 29, A Psalm of David
Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever. May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless his people with peace!
O Worship the King

O worship the King, all glorious above,
and gratefully sing his wonderful love;
our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.
O tell of his might, O sing of his grace,
whose robe is the light, and canopy space!
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.
You alone are the matchless King
to you alone be all majesty.
Your glories and wonders,
what tongue can recite?
You breathe in the air, you shine in the light.
O measureless might, ineffable love
while angels delight to worship above
thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!
Jesus Paid It All
Text: Elvina M. Hall Music: John T. Grape (1865) Add. Chorus: Alex Nifong, Kristian Stanfill CCLI# 1888005
I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”
Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow
Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone
And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
Jesus died my soul to save
My lips shall still repeat
Oh, praise the One who paid my debt
And raised this life up from the dead
Jesus Died My Soul To Save

I stand amazed at Your love for me
That lonely night in Gethsemane
This sinner's heart can't help but thrill
To hear You pray Father not my will
What depth of love what reach of grace
Oh how my grateful heart now aches
To sing it louder the refrain
Jesus died my soul to save
Atonement full applied to me
The blood that spilled at Calvary
Has swallowed all my sin and shame
I'm reconciled in Jesus' name
Oh such pleasure oh such pain
The Father's wrath and fury lay
On Christ whom saints and angels praise
Jesus died my soul to save
Come you broken bound by sin
And let your weary journey end
Come and lay your burdens down
Where mercy rules and peace abounds
Heidelberg Catechism—Question 1
1. Q. What is your only comfort in life and death?
A. That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from all the power of the devil. He also preserves me in such a way that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, all things must work together for my salvation. Therefore, by His Holy Spirit He also assures me of eternal life and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for Him.
Oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go
©2009 Words by George Matheson Music, Arrangement & Additional Words by Joel Davis CCLI1888005
O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee
I give thee back the life I owe,
that in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be
My life is not my own, it’s Yours
O light that follows all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
that in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be
So light a fire in my heart, and I will burn for You
O Joy that seeks me through the pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
and feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be
So anoint me with joy, and joyful I will be
O Cross that’s lifting up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
and from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be
We will sing, “Holy, Holy is the King of Kings!”

Now Why This Fear
© 2011 Sovereign Grace Worship Music and alt. and add. words by Doug Plank, original vss by Augustus Toplady (1772)
Now why this fear and unbelief?
Has not the Father put to grief
His spotless Son for us?
And will the righteous Judge of men,
Condemn me for that debt of sin,
Now cancelled at the cross?
Jesus, all my trust
Is in Your blood
Jesus, You’ve rescued us
Through Your great love!
Complete atonement You have made,
And by Your death completely paid
The debt Your people owed
No wrath remains for us to face
We’re sheltered by Your saving grace,
And sprinkled with Your blood.
Be still, my soul, and know this peace
The merits of your Great High Priest
Have bought your liberty
Rely then on His precious blood,
Don’t fear your banishment from God
Since Jesus sets you free
How sweet the sound of saving grace
How sweet the sound of saving grace
Christ died for me
