Psalm 133

This is a psalm about going up together to the presence of God to be washed, to be anointed and then to anoint and bestow blessing upon the world. THe psalm seems to progress in this way.

This is a royal psalm, a psalm of ascents that sets pilgrims apart (sanctifies them), transforms them and then sends them out to be kingly agents of redemption.  We see this because the act of anointing with oil sets one apart and endows them with authority

What if Jesus spoke this Psalm?  How would we understand it from his perspective?  Our unity (found in our union with Christ through his death and resurrection--see John 17) is the oil that anoints Jesus as King.  Unity is the crown of Aaron in the same way that the unity of the church is Jesus’ crown.

The dew that settles on Mt. Hermon is a picture of what happens when brothers live together in unity.  It is a blessing that spreads out across the land covering it with blessing.  So it is easy to see the missional component in the progression of the psalm.

So let us ascend the hill of the Lord, find ourselves bound together in the unity of the Spirit through the washing of the blood of Christ so that we may be anointed kings and queens of a new kingdom that brings redemption and restoration to a broken world…

The Glory of Unity—Psalm 133

Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.

God of Wonders

Lord of all creation, of water, earth and sky;
The heavens are your tabernacle.  Glory to the Lord on high!

God of wonders beyond our galaxy, you are holy, holy.
The universe declares your majesty.  You are holy, holy.
Lord of heaven and earth, Lord of heaven and earth.

Early in the morning I will celebrate the light.
When I stumble in the darkness, I will call your name by night.

God of wonders beyond our galaxy, you are holy, holy.
The universe declares your majesty.  You are holy, holy.
Lord of heaven and earth, Lord of heaven and earth.

Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth.

God of wonders beyond our galaxy, you are holy, holy.
Precious Lord, reveal your heart to me.
You are holy, holy, holy, holy.

Humbled by God’s Glory—we all say:

Father, we have not believed through our thoughts, words and deeds that you are the Almighty Lord of all creation.  Forgive us and reconcile us unto yourself.

Come, Ye Sinners
©2000 Detuned Radio Music (ASCAP). Words: Joseph Hart. Music: Matthew S. Smith. #1888005

Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched, Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus, ready, stands to save you, Full of pity, joined with power.
He is able, He is able; He is willing; doubt no more.

Come ye needy, come, and welcome, God’s free bounty glorify;
True belief and true repentance, Every grace that brings you nigh.
Without money, without money. Come to Jesus Christ and buy.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Bruised and broken by the fall;
If you tarry ’til you’re better, You will never come at all.
Not the righteous, not the righteous; Sinners Jesus came to call.

Let not conscience make you linger, Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness He requires Is to feel your need of Him.
This He gives you, this He gives you, ’Tis the Spirit’s rising beam.

Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended; Pleads the merit of His blood.
Venture on Him; venture wholly, Let no other trust intrude.
None but Jesus, none but Jesus Can do helpless sinners good.

Receiving Jesus’ Gift—we all say:

Brother Jesus, we have not believed through our thoughts, words and deeds that your death and resurrection are sufficient to give us a kingdom-of-heaven-life in the midst of our present circumstances.  Forgive us and reconcile us unto yourself.

Renewal
Renewal is recognizing what we’ve treasured more than God and seeking his gracious forgiveness.

Forever Reign
© 2009 SHOUT! Publishing Jason Ingram | Reuben Morgan CCLI 1888005

You are good. You are good when there's nothing good in me.
You are love. You are love on display for all to see.
You are light. You are light when the darkness closes in.
You are hope. You are hope. You have covered all my sin.

You are peace. You are peace when my fear is crippling.
You are true. You are true even in my wandering.
You are joy. You are joy. You're the reason that I sing.
You are life. You are life. In You death has lost its sting.

(Oh) I'm running to Your arms, I'm running to Your arms.
The riches of Your love will always be enough.
Nothing compares to Your embrace.
Light of the world forever reign.

You are more. You are more than my words will ever say.
You are Lord. You are Lord. All creation will proclaim.
You are here. You are here. In Your presence I'm made whole.
You are God. You are God of all else I'm letting go.

My heart will sing no other Name, Jesus, Jesus.

Responding to the Spirit—we all say:

Holy Spirit, we have not believed through our thoughts, words and deeds that the power that raised Jesus from the dead has brought us to life and dwells within us. Forgive us and reconcile us unto yourself, for the glory of the Father, to the praise of the Son by the power of the Spirit. Amen.

The Glory of Unity – Colossians 1:19-22

For the fullness of God was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ's blood on the cross. This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found, he is my light, my strength, my song.
This Cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease.
My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save.
'Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied,
for every sin on Him was laid.  Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay, light of the world by darkness slain.
Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again.
And as He stands in victory sin's curse has lost its grip on me.
For I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me.
From life's first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man can ever pluck me from His hand.
'Till He returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, vast, unmeasured, boundless, free!
Rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me!
Underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love.
Leading onward, leading homeward, to thy glorious rest above!

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, spread his praise from shore to shore!
How he loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, nevermore!
How he watches o’er his loved ones, died to call them all his own;
How for them he intercedeth, watcheth o’er them from the throne!

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of every love the best!
‘Tis an ocean vast of blessing, ‘tis a haven sweet of rest!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, ‘tis a heaven of heavens to me;
and it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to thee!
